Finally, Buhari formally declares to re-contest for the presidency in 2019

After months of speculations, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Abuja formally declared his intention to vie for the presidency in 2019.

He made his decision to seek for another four-year term as President of Nigeria known at the ongoing National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.

In a terse statement, the President ’s Personal Assistant on New Media Engagement, Bashir Ahmad, said, “President Muhammadu Buhari has just officially announced his intention to seek re-election in 2019.”

The 75-year -old Nigerian President had kept Nigerians speculating over whether or not he would want to go for a second tenure.

His decision to seek a second term in office is coming amidst calls from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, erstwhile Military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, and several Arewa groups, who described his administration as a failure and advised him against seeking re-election.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that President Buhari while making his intention known also urged APC members to grant waiver to the national chairman of the party, Chief John Odegie-Oyegun and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC), who want to recontest in the party’s congress.

In attendance at the ongoing meeting include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara and 24 state governors.
