Iran threatens to rejoin nuclear arms race within hours if...

The President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani has revealed that his country will not hesitate to ramp up nuclear proliferation within hours if the US imposes more sanctions on Tehran.

Speaking on Tuesday, Rouhani said Iran could abandon its nuclear agreement with world powers “within hours” if the US tries to breach the agreement it reached in 2015.

“If America wants to go back to the experience (of imposing sanctions), Iran would certainly return in a short time – not a week or a month but within hours – to conditions more advanced than before the start of negotiations,” Rouhani said.

Reacting to the statement by the Iranian President, United Nations Nikki Haley said the new U.S. sanctions were unrelated to the Iran nuclear deal and that Iran must be held responsible for “its missile launches, support for terrorism, disregard for human rights, and violations of U.N. Security Council resolutions.”

“Iran cannot be allowed to use the nuclear deal to hold the world hostage … The nuclear deal must not become ‘too big to fail’,” Haley said in a statement.

Three days ago, Iran in retaliation to new sanctions imposed by the United States gave approval for a bill to boost spending on Tehran’s missile programme and the elite Revolutionary Guards.

According to the state broadcaster IRIB, lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the outlines of the bill to “counter America’s terrorist and adventurist actions” as some chanted “Death to America”.
