Iwobi starts in Arsenal's defeat at Newcastle

Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi made the starting lineup for Arsenal in their away 2-1 loss to Newcastle United in an English Premier League game on Sunday.

Iwobi, who was making his 21st appearance this season in the league for the Gunners, came off for Eddie Nketiah towards the end of the game.

The Nigerian couldn’t help as his side lost a 1-0 lead and watched their hosts come from behind to seal a first victory over Arsenal in 11 premier league meetings.

Alexander Lacazette scored the first goal for Arsenal in the 14th minute of the game before goals from Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie in each half for Newcastle United sealed the victory.

Arsenal are still sixth in the EPL table with 54 points from 33 games, six points adrift Chelsea in fifth place and 13 behind Tottenham Hotspur in fourth.

“I think we are safe with 41 points,” said Rafa Benitez.

“It’s a massive achievement for the players, the city and the fans. I want to congratulate everyone.

“Today we didn’t play amazing football because we played an amazing team but you have to manage how you play and compete for the win.”
