Melaye injured, in Abuja hospital after jumping out of police vehicle

Embattled Senator Dino Melaye has ended up in an Abuja hospital after allegedly jumping out of a police vehicle in a bid to escape, being taken to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

The incident happened after the police team, which was taking the senator to court allegedly decided to take him to Kogi State instead.

Melaye was said to have on noticing that the police were now taking him to his state, Kogi, jumped out of the vehicle, around Area 1, Abuja and taken to his heels, vowing that he would rather die than be taken to Kogi to be embarrassed.

The senator was said to have sustained injuries following his bid to escape from the police and was subsequently rushed to the emergency unit of Zanklin Hospital in Abuja in an ambulance.

A man, who identified himself simply as Peter, who followed the ambulance to the hospital, claimed that he was an eyewitness to what happened.

He told newsmen at the hospital, “I was there at Area 1 when the police vehicle stopped somewhere and amid the confusion, there were shouts of ‘shoot him, shoot him.

“He (Melaye) has been saying it that they want to take his life and we can see that now. Yesterday, about 200 policemen were in his house. They were there till this morning. When he came out, he told them ‘okay, I’m going to go with you people to the police station.’

“He told them that he is not a criminal and that they don’t even have any arrest warrant on him. But he followed them.

“It was later this afternoon, while he was being taken to court, around that Area 1, the crowd had gathered and the police officers were there with him. I don’t know if he was pushed out of the vehicle or not but amid the confusion, they later moved him from there.”

Police had on Monday laid siege to the senator’s Maitama home, Abuja soon after he was detained and released by Nigeria Immigration Service at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja while on his way to Morocco.

According to the police, the senator refused to honour the force summon extended to him to respond to allegations leveled against him by two criminal gangs apprehended in Kogi State by the police recently.
