NAFDAC urges exporters not to embarrass Nigeria

Nigerian exporters have been advised by the National Agency for Food And Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to get proper certification for their produce before attempting to ferry their produce outside the shores of the country to avoid embarrassing Nigeria.

The agency made the call following the rejection of about 25 Nigerian produce by the European Union (EU) between 2015 and 2016.

Speaking more about the need to get proper certification, Spokesman of NAFDAC, Dr Abubakar Jimoh while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja, said lack of standard forced the EU to reject the 25 exported food products from Nigeria.

Jimoh said some of the exported food produce rejected from Nigeria include beans, sesame seeds, melon seeds, dried fish and meat, peanut chips and palm oil, among others.

He called on exporters to ensure screening of their produce for export by NAFDAC’s standard and internationally accredited laboratories for proper certification which is free of charge.

“The Federal Government is doing this as a deliberate policy to encourage our exporters and to satisfy international standards for exports.

“We are now appealing to our exporters not to run away from product certification of NAFDAC, it is free and we don’t charge anything for such service.

“We have adequate personnel and equipment to carry out such responsibility in the country,’’ Jimoh said.

Jimoh said by exposing such produce to
certification, the country’s image will not be put in bad light and the exporters will not incur huge loss thereby saving the economy of the negative effect that may arise from the rejection of such produce when exported.
