NBC bans airing of “unworthy songs” waxed by Olamide, Davido & 9ice

No less than five songs from three different artistes deemed unworthy by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) have been banned from being aired on national radio and TV stations.

The five songs tagged “Not to be Broadcasted” by NBC include tracks like Wavy Level and Wo by Olamide, Fall and IF (remix) by Davido, and Living Things by Alapomeji CEO, 9ice.

Their announcement is coming four days after the Federal Ministry of Health in a post on Twitter informed that the video for Olamide’s latest track “Wo” is in violation of the Tobacco Control Act 2015.

The ministry revealed further in the Twitter post that Olamide’s several mention of cigarettes in the song contravenes Nigeria’s laws on Tobacco advertising, promotion & sponsorship.

The full text of the Twitter post by the ministry reads thus;

“The public is informed of the dangerous public health content & violation of ?? Tobacco Ctrl Act 2015 in “Wo” by @olamide_YBNL #ClearTheAir.

“The content & video contains scenes that violates the ban on Tobacco Advertising, Promotion & Sponsorship provision of the act #ClearTheAir.

“The video promoting a dangerous habit encourages second-hand smoking. The risks include cancers, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

This is the second time in two years that the pair of Olamide and Davido would have their songs banned on air by the NBC.

Recall in the year 2015, the NBC banned a good number of local songs including Olamide’s Shakiti Bobo, Fans Mi by Davido (featuring American rapper Meek Mill), Wizkid‘s In My Bed, and Iyanya‘s collaboration with Don Jazzy titled Gift.

Others songs banned were Tony Montana by Naeto C featuring D’banj, Gbese by Lil Kesh, Ibadi by May D, Tesojue by Reminisce, Yayo by Phyno, Lomo by Jhybo and Pre‘s song titled, The Girl.

    NBC needs to be very professional about contents. The NBC should have all contents broadcasted screen almost immediately before the contents go on air.

    The problem with Nigerian entertainers is that most of them are not educated enough to know what they should have in their contents and what they should not, they are ignorant of all these things NBC is accusing of.

    NBC can be very funny. Most of the music contents we have on air are worth banning, but they’ve not. I’m sure if the ministry of health didn’t raise alarm, NBC won’t have banned these contents
