Saraki, others dragged to court over comment on IGP Idris

Senate President Bukola Saraki has said that he would want to quickly honour the Nigerian Police’s summon concerning allegations against him in the Offa bank robbery incident.

He has therefore sent his aide to obtain the letter of invitation from the police to enable him visit the force without delay.

There are however indications that the Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo may intervene in the ongoing drama between the senate president, and the police.

Osinbajo on Monday met with the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris; the Director General of the State Security Service, Lawal Daura; and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

It is believed that the Saraki issue may be the main agenda of the meeting, even as it is believed that the police boss may have sought, and received the approval of the presidency to go after Saraki

Saraki said in a message on his Twitter handle on Monday, “I have just informed my ADC to get the letter of invitation from @ PoliceNG in respect of the allegations raised yesterday — so that I can immediately honour the alleged invitation.”

The force headquarters had on Sunday summoned Saraki for questioning following claims that five of the suspects arrested over the April 2018 Offa bank robberies in Kwara State, accused him of being their sponsor.

The robbery claimed the lives of no less than 30 persons including nine policemen.

Saraki had claimed that linking him to the Offa robbery was the handy work of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris.

He had said, “Members of the public will remember that on May 16, 2018, I alerted the Senate about the information passed on to me by my State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatai Ahmed, over a plot by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris to frame me up by getting some suspected cultists arrested in Ilorin to implicate me. It is believed that the timely leakage of the plot in that case aborted the use of the suspected cultists to implicate me. Now, it is the Offa bank robbery suspects that are about to be used.”
