Philippines seize North Korean ship‎

In line with recent tightened sanctions against Pyongyang as regards its nuclear programme, Philippine authorities says it has seized a ship from North Korea.

According to deputy presidential spokesman, Man Olo Quezon, the Philippines “has to do its part to enforce the sanctions”.

The seized ship is one of the 31 ships operated by North Korean firm Ocean Maritime Management and it is currently docked at the Subic Bay. The ship which is subject to asset freeze and sanctions is at the moment unloading palm kernels.

On inspection of the ship, Philippine authorities say they discovered safety issues and the government has informed that it will impound the ship and eventually deport the crew.

A second inspection was carried out on Saturday with coastguard spokesman Commander Armand Balilo revealing to AFP news agency that the crew of 21 had been “very cooperative”.
