Quadri falls to World no. 2 Zhendong in Swedish Open Q/finals

Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri could not make it to the semifinals of the Swedish Open after he fell world number 2 Fan Zhendong in a last-8 encounter on Saturday.

Quadri, who had had an impressive run in the tournament, could only win a set over Zhendong as he lost 4-1 (11-6, 11-8, 12-10, 8-11, 11-8) to the Chinese.

The Nigerian table tennis star, ranked 27 in the world, had beaten Portugal’s Freitas Marcos by four games to zero on Friday after he had caused a major upset on Thursday when he defeated world no. 12 Wong Chun Ting 4-2.

Quadri got into the main draw of the Men’s Singles after seeing off Hong Kong player, Kit Kwan Ho in the preliminary stage, but his brilliant run ended on Saturday.

However, Zhendong admitted the match with the Nigerian wasn’t an easy one. He told the ITTF official website after the game that “Quadri is very powerful” and is a “tough opponent.”

Zhendong will meet Zhou Yu in the semi-final match later on Saturday.
