Sagay: Buhari’ll fund 2019 poll regardless of NASS’ approval

The controversy surrounding the supplementary budget for the 2019 general elections took a new dimension yesterday when the Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay, said President Muhammadu Buhari would fund the exercise, regardless of approval by the National Assembly.

While underscoring the sanctity of elections in the sustenance of any democracy, Sagay said it would not allow anybody to hold the country to ransom. Sagay, in an interview with New Telegraph, accused Senators and House of Representatives’ members of alleged covert moves to “subvert democracy”.

Sagay, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), insisted that the federal lawmakers must reconvene urgently to consider the supplementary budget submitted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying failure to do so amounted to abdication of responsibility.

“Elections are number one; they are superior to virtually everything. So, it is the duty of the National Assembly to meet and consider the budget, and pass it,” Sagay said. He vowed that: “If they don’t, they are committing a very serious breach of their duty, which in my view, could be likened to some form of treason.
