Shekarau speaks on the ‘disturbing’ number of PDP presidential aspirants

The number of aspirants seeking the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which many view as disturbing, as it may lead to implosion in the party, has been described as a good development by one of the aspirants, Ibrahim Shekarau.

Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State and one of the numerous others seeking to grab PDP presidential ticket to wrest power from Buhari in 2019, argued that the numbers of aspirants rather than lead the party to implosion will instead provide it with better chances of returning to power in 2019.

The aspirant was said to have made this claim when he spoke after a visit to Governor Seriake Dickson at his Toru-Orua country home in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State at the weekend.

A statement signed by Dickson’s media aide, Francis Agbo, quoted Shekarau, a former education minister, who visited the governor to condole with him over the demise of his mother as saying: “It is God who decides who leads and all the aspirants are aware that only one person can emerge as candidate. The beauty of politics is that it’s about people, I always say the more the aspirants you have for many positions, the better for it.

“The number of presidential aspirants in the PDP is a sign of hope. It is hope that brings people to come out to contest elections. What is important is not how many aspirants that are contesting but how responsibly they are conducting themselves. How are they conducting the business of their campaigns as a family?

“Just last week, the PDP assembled all the presidential aspirants; we exchanged views on working together and working together like brothers.

“We know only one person will win and if we all move as a family, in the end whoever takes it, according to our two faiths, Islam and Christianity, God has already decided. It is He who decides who leads in the end and we all believe that.”
