Spain issues arrest warrant for exiled Catalonia leader Puigdemont

Exiled Catalan leader Carles Puidemont now faces fresh worry after Spain issued a warrant of arrest to Finland where his is now staying after he moved from Brussels in Belgium.

The latest move follows fresh legal action against separatist politicians from the wealthy northeastern region and it is coming after a Spanish High Court detained five Catalan politicians for their role in the region’s secessionist bid staged in October last year.

Reports say authorities in Finland have already received the international warrant for Puidgemont’s detention issued by Spain.

Madrid’s legal action against Puigdemont is an “attack on the heart of democracy”, Catalan parliament speaker Roger Torrent said, speaking in front of the parliament, accompanied by various other heads of parties and a crowd of supporters.

Reports say Puidgemont faces up to 25 years in prison if he returns to Spain on charges of rebellion and sedition for his part in organizing an illegal referendum on secession last year.
