Thousands rally in over 80 cities to end gun violence

The clamour to end gun violence in the US has gone viral with students from Washington DC to Tokyo and over 80 cities and towns rallying to demand an end to the issue which is now a growing concern among Americans.

Many of the protesters marching for ‘their lives’ are demanding that US legislators address recent school shootings and strengthen gun control laws in the country.

Edna Chavez, one of the students from all over the country who took the stage at the March for Our Lives rally on Saturday in the nation’s capital says she has lost many loved ones to gun violence.

“I am a survivor,” she said.

“I have lived in South LA my entire life and have lost many loved ones to gun violence,” she added, speaking about the death of her brother, Ricardo, who was killed by a bullet when he was in high school, and how the trauma and loss changed her life.

“This is normal; normal to the point that I have learned to duck bullets before I learned how to read.”

Meanwhile, the US justice department through the US attorney general has announced a proposal to ban bump stocks.

Sessions has officially proposed a rule that would effectively ban bump stocks, devices that turn semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic weapons.

The announcement comes as thousands of people in the US take part in the March For Our Lives protests which call for stricter gun control.

“After the senseless attack in Las Vegas, this proposed rule is a critical step in our effort to reduce the threat of gun violence that is in keeping with the Constitution and the laws passed by Congress,” Sessions said in a statement.
