US: Rifle association kicks against plans by Trump to change gun laws

Plans by President Donald Trump and other Republicans to change U.S. gun laws after the deadly school shooting in Florida that killed 17 students and staff is being kicked against by the National Rifle Association.

Reports say the group is not in support of moves to raise the age limit for buying certain types of guns and the proposed banning of bump stocks that enable semi-automatic rifles to shoot hundreds of rounds a minute.

According to Dana Loesch, spokeswoman for the association; “The NRA doesn’t back any ban.”

The gun control debate took on a new urgency following the Florida school attack carried out by a 19-year-old assailant.

Mr Trump who was speaking at the White House, said he had directed the justice department to propose a law to make the accessories illegal.

Reports says Trump has already signed an order to ban bump-stock devices, which were used by a gunman who killed 58 Las Vegas concert-goers last year.

Such devices enable a rifle to shoot hundreds of rounds a minute.
