Afraid our convention will mark its end, APC plotting to disrupt it, PDP alleges

By Editor

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of plots to disrupt its Saturday national convention in Abuja over fear that the success of the event will mark the end of the ruling party.

PDP national publicity secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye stated this during a news briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

While he said that President Muhammadu Buhari was not part of the plot, he however called on him to urgently investigate the allegation and ensure that the convention was not disrupted by some “overzealous elements in the APC government”.

“We have credible information that some overzealous elements in the APC Government want to disrupt the PDP national convention.

“It is not from the very top; they know that if we have a hitch-free convention, it will mark the end of APC in power.

“We call on President Buhari to investigate and ensure that those who want to disrupt the convention refrain from doing so.”

The opposition spokesman went further to say that any attempt to disrupt the convention is tantamount to disrupting the country’s democracy and urged Buhari to provide sufficient security in and around the venue for the event.

According to him, the PDP while in power never interrupted programmes of other political parties, “rather it encouraged the growth of other parties,” he said.

For security measures, Adeyeye said that accreditation for the convention would be strictly monitored. He therefore called on persons not accredited not to go near the convention venue as such persons would not be allowed within the vicinity of the Eagles Square.

The party, he said, would make available the list of accredited delegates to all aspirants at least 48 hours before the convention to diffuse the rumour that the list has been altered to suit selected aspirants.

Adeyeye further noted that Osun State would not participate in the national convention, adding that Anambra State was still under consideration due to disagreements in the state.
