Buhari meets security chiefs, approves $1bn to fight Boko Haram

As the Boko Haram terrorist sect continues its attacks in the North East part of the country, despite government’s claims that they have been defeated, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the release of $1 billion for the procurement of security equipment to fight the insurgent group.

President Buhari made this known on Wednesday during a meeting with security chiefs at the State House, Abuja.

The President had earlier cancelled the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting this Wednesday for the meeting with security chiefs.

The development was made known to State House correspondent at the end of the meeting by the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali.

President Buhari was said to have also during the meeting urged the security chiefs to ensure that efforts are intensified to secure the release of Leah Sharibu, the only Dapchi schoolgirl still in the captivity of Boko Haram.

Boko Haram had last month released about 104 school girls abducted from Dapchi, Yobe State, but refused to release Leah Sharibu for supposedly denying to renounce Christianity for Islam.

Buhari’s meeting with the security chiefs is the first since the recent call by a former Chief of Army Staff, Theophilus Danjuma, that Nigerians should defend themselves against killer herdsmen.

Danjuma had alleged that Nigerian security forces are compromised and now aiding killer herdsmen to attack and kill innocent Nigerians across the country.
