CHINA: 32 people declared missing after tanker and ship collision in Shangai

Chinese authorities have declared 32 people missing after an oil tanker and a cargo ship collided off China’s east coast with broadcaster CGTN showing huge plumes of smoke rising from the scene of the incident.

Reports say the tanker which had been sailing to Daesan, South Korea from Kharg Island, Iran, collided with the cargo ship in an incident which happened around 160 nautical miles (296 km) off the coast of Shanghai.

According to China’s Ministry of Transport, the Sanchi tanker, a Panama-registered vessel carrying 136,000 tonnes burst into flames after the collision.

The ministry said the missing people are crew members of the tanker including 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis.

It also revealed that the 21-strong crew of the cargo ship had been rescued.

“Sanchi is floating and burning as of now. There is an oil slick and we are pushing forward with rescue efforts,” the ministry said.

Eight Chinese ships have been sent for the search and rescue operation, China’s official Xinhua news agency said.
