CHINA: 56 people killed in floods as river overflows

Heavy rains in China has caused the Yangtse River to overflow killing no less than 56 people who were swept away by floods.

According to Chinese rescue operatives, 22 others have also been declared missing as heavy rains pummeled southern China, flooding towns, cutting off power and destroying houses.

Reports say more than 38,000 homes have collapsed and nearly 880,000 hectares of crops damaged forcing more than 1.2 million people to evacuate southern and central provinces of China after water levels in more than 60 different rivers rose above warning levels.

The situation has forced the Chinese government to disbursed $103 million in emergency aid so far to help southern and central provinces deal with the flooding.
