COVID-19: US now tops with most cases, as Spain toll nears 5,000
The United States of America has now recorded more cases of COVID-19 than any other country with close to 86,000 infections, including fewer than 800 recoveries with 1,300 people dead thus far as it overtakes China with highest number of cases globally.
According to the Johns Hopkins University, the total number of deaths recorded by the US now pushes the total numbers worldwide to more than 531,000, as the global death toll surged past 24,000.
US President Donald Trump, who had until recently insisted on calling the new coronavirus the “Chinese virus”, tweeted on Friday that he and China’s President Xi Jinping had “a very good conversation” and discussed “in great detail the coronavirus that is ravaging large parts of our Planet.”
Meanwhile, Spain has recorded 769 new deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total toll so far in the country to 4,858.
The health ministry said the number of confirmed cases now stands at 64,059 with Italy reporting the highest death toll arising from the coronavirus outbreak with more than 8,200 deaths.
