Deadly tsunami hits Indonesia, kills 62 people, injures 584 others

A volcano-triggered tsunami has hit both sides of Indonesia’s Sunda Strait claiming the lives of no less than 62 people and left at least 584 others victims injured.

Reports say volcano-triggered tsunami sent a wall of water crashing some 20 metres inland and sweeping away hundreds of homes and hotels, with 20 people said to be missing according to the country’s disaster management agency.

Moments after the ugly incident, authorities warned residents and tourists in coastal areas around the Sunda Strait to stay away from beaches.

“Please do not be around the beaches around the Sunda Strait. Those who have evacuated, please do not return yet,” said Rahmat Triyono of BMKG
TV footage showed roads blocked by debris from damaged houses, overturned cars and fallen trees.
