Demolition of unfit houses begin in Kenya

A number of buildings are currently facing demolition in Kenya following an order by authorities to bring down buildings that do not meet required standards.

The demolitions took place in the capital of Nairobi in an area where the collapse of an apartment killed at least 42 people last week.

Eight buildings deemed unfit were the first to be destroyed in the district of Huruma with more than 200 to follow according to reports.

Officials say many of the houses are substandard or built on unsafe grounds.

Meanwhile, rescue operation continues at the collapsed building, which came down after heavy a rainfall.

At least 70 people are still missing, while 140 have been rescued local rescuers reveal.
