Despite omission from W’Cup squad, Morata wishes Spain ‘lots of luck’

Chelsea FC and Spain striker, Alvaro Morata has wished his national team the best of luck in the FIFA 2018 World Cup despite being omitted in the 23-man list released by the Spanish federation on Monday.

Coach Julen Lopetegui excluded the 25-year-old who scored 11 goals in his debut season at Stamford Bridge.

The striker, who won the English FA Cup with Chelsea last weekend, took to Twitter minutes after the announcement to promise his countrymen his full support up till the end of the tournament.

“A lot of luck in the World Cup!! From now on I will be supporting and encouraging until the end as always!!,” the Blues forward tweeted in Spanish minutes after the squad was announced.

Morata’s Blues team-mates Marcos Alonso and Cesc Fabregas join Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin in also missing out on selection.

Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea, Manchester City’s David Silva, Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta and Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal are players from the English Premier League that made the squad.

Real Madrid and Barcelona supply 10 players between them, with veteran Barca midfielder Andres Iniesta included.

Spain will begin their campaign against Portugal on 15 June when the World Cup finals kicks off in Russia.

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Isco (Real Madrid), Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich), David Silva (Manchester City), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid), Koke (Atletico Madrid).

Forwards: Marco Asensio (Real Madrid), Iago Aspas (Celta Vigo), Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid), Rodrigo Moreno (Valencia), Lucas Vazquez (Real Madrid).
