Dutch journalist gunned down by ISIL sniper in Libya

A Dutch journalist identified as Jeroen Oerlemans has been gunned down in an attack blamed on an ISIL sniper.

According to reports, Jeroen was killed while covering government-backed offensive against ISIL in the group’s Libyan stronghold of Sirte, a city 450km east of Tripoli.

Spokesman for a hospital in Misrata (where pro-government fighters are treated) identified as Dr Akram Gliwan, told newsmen that Jeroen, a photographer, was shot in the chest by an ISIL sniper.

He also added that the body of Jeroen had been transferred to Misrata, 200km west of Sirte.

Following the death of Jeroen, hundreds of people took to social media to remember the well-respected journalist, and to offer condolences to his family.

“Your photographs of Sirte, Libya and other places will live on forever,” the Dutch ambassador to Libya, Eric Strating, said on Twitter. “Thank you for shining your light on the misery of others.”
