ECOWAS says it has no deal of immunity for Gambia's Jammeh

The deal which led to an agreement that convinced Gambia’s longtime ruler Yahya Jammeh to flee into exile is not inclusive of immunity, so says leaders of West Africa regional body ECOWAS.

That much information was conveyed by Senegal’s foreign minister on Sunday after ousted Jammeh flew out of the Gambian capital of Banjul late on Saturday as a regional military force was poised to remove him.

Regional leaders had not gone as far as agreeing immunity despite Jammeh’s attempts to secure this, Senegalese Foreign Minister Mankeur Ndiaye told Reuters.

“President Jammeh and his team concocted a declaration to be endorsed by ECOWAS, the United Nations and the African Union that gave him every guarantee, essentially impunity, this declaration was signed by no one.” Mankeur Ndiaye said.

Long serving Jammeh, who is accused of serious rights violations, led his country for 22 years but refused to accept defeat in a December election but finally stepped down after last ditch negotiations.
