EDO: Court fixes date for arraignment of Pastor Ize-Iyamu, ex-Dep Gov, PDP chair, others

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was defeated by Governor Godwin Obaseki in 2016, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has officially declared he would dump the PDP.

He said he would officially leave the PDP along with many of his supporters and followers.

Ize-Iyamu, who said he and his group would leave the PDP “without malice or bitterness” is expected to join that party that defeated him in 2016, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He made this known in a resignation letter he signed along with several others and dated November 21, 2019.

In the letter addressed to the Edo State PDP chairman, Ize-Iyamu and his group appreciated the leadership of the PDP, “for the opportunity to belong,” to the party.

He said that their decision to leave the PDP “was unanimous and was not an easy one, considering the warm relationship we have enjoyed with many members of the party.”

He added, “There are, however, many compelling reasons that have necessitated this resolution but it would be uncharitable even to throw stones at a house we once inhabited.

“We wish to state for the records that our primary motivation in politics is to effectively represent our people in the political arena and ensure government policies and resources are for the betterment of our people.”

The development is coming after a recent report claimed that the PDP in the state had sacked Ize-Iyamu as its member.

This is also coming at a time speculations of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s intention to dump the APC continue to heighten.

Claims of Obaseki plan to leave the APC followed worsening rift between him and the national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole.

There are speculations in some quarters already, that Ize-Iyamu may still be targeting the governorship seat, by establishing a relationship with Oshiomhole, who many say is not favourably disposed to Obaseki having a second shot at the number one seat under the APC.
