2019: Why I want to be governor in Imo again —Ohakim

A former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, and other leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Okigwe zone of the state have threatened to dump the party.

They demanded the immediate reinstatement of the sacked executive members of the party in the state.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Collins Ughalaa, Chief Press Secretary, to Ohakim, the leaders made the threat during a meeting on issues to table before the National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus.
According to the statement: “After rigorous deliberations on political developments in the state with particular attention on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the leaders resolved to exert their energy towards repairing the damaged vehicle of the PDP.

“The leaders also resolved to set up a committee that is made up of competent men and women to meet with the National Chairman of the PDP and demand the immediate reinstatement of stacked elected executives of the party in the 27 local government areas and 305 wards of the state, that were elected prior to the National Convention that was held recently in Abuja.

“The Okigwe Zone leaders said the committee has a period of 14 days to complete their work. They also resolved to seek alternative political platform should the National Chairman of the PDP not agree to their demand and effect the desired change.”

In a related development, Ohakim on Wednesday disclosed that Governor Rochas Okorocha has so far received more than N1 trillion as revenue since he became governor in 2011.
According to him, despite the huge resources the governor has not addressed the challenges confronting the state.

Ohakim made the disclosure during a meeting with political leaders of Okigwe Zone at his Burma country home in Okohia, Isiala Mbano, where he also announced his return to active partisan politics after close to two years of being on sabbatical.

According to Mr. Ughalaa, the former Governor told the Okigwe leaders that “the Okorocha’s administration has got a little above N1trl since 2011, adding that irrespective of the huge resources, Imo people now have death, death, death, instead of the job, job, job promise of the state government, and that Imo people now have burial, burial, burial, instead of the promise of industries, industries, industries”.

He also recalled “the recent revelation of the Imo Economic Development Initiative (IEDI) led by Prof Maurice Iwu, former National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in a letter to Governor Okorocha that Imo State owes N93.27bn domestic debt as at December 31, 2016”, saying that “Imo State has collapsed”.

He noted that he was not condemning the Okorocha led government but sympathizing with them, noting that it is easier to make promises than to achieve them.
