One-time Secretary General of the United Nations Boutros Boutros-Ghali who served the world body in a topsy-turvy five-year term which ended in 1996 died Tuesday in his native Cairo, Egypt.

As a sign of honour, the UN Security Council observed a minute of silence for the diplomat who was replaced by another African, Ghanaian Kofi Annan.

93-year-old Boutros-Ghali was the first African to assume the U.N.’s top post, but his tenure ended when the United States vetoed his nomination for a second five-year term.
