As part of efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change the federal government through the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) in partnership with the United Kingdom Development of Nigeria and Climate Change (UK-DECCAN) and the British High Commission in Nigeria have developed the Nigeria Energy Calculator (NECA2050).
The calculator, Ripples learnt, has the potential to determine the energy demand and supply of the country as well as the greenhouse gas emissions over the period 2010 to 2050.
Speaking at the official launch in Abuja on Wednesday the ECN Director General, Prof. Eli Jidere Bala said the NECA2050 was adapted from the UK 2050 calculator because of its workability.
In his welcome address, the Special Representative, UK’s Foreign Secretary for Climate Change, Sir David King stated that the most important issue about the calculator is that energy infrastructure last up to 50 years.

Justifying the need for the initiative, the UK envoy said: “If I build a power station today, it will still be there in 50 years’ time producing electricity. So what we do today will impact in the post 2050 world.”
Expatiating, he said: “At the moment we have scenarios based on whatever technology that is available to us now. We don’t know what technology will be available to us in 10 years time. So we will revisit this calculator every five years, and we will keep revisiting and we will plan with it. And the planning will continue to get better.”
