INEC warns political parties over primaries

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sent out a note of warning to political parties hoping to participate in the 2019 general elections.

The commission called on them to ensure their primary elections and disputes arising from them were resolved on or before Sunday, October 7.

INEC said that the October 7 deadline for the exercise as earlier published in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 general elections remains untouchable.

The electoral body’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Solomon Soyebi, stated this in Abuja on Thursday, explaining that “the resolution was made at the end of the commission’s weekly meeting held earlier that day.

According to him, 89 of the 91 registered political parties that gave notice of their intentions to conduct primaries as required by the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) had commenced and were at various levels of the process.

“INEC wishes to restate that the conduct of primaries and resolution of all disputes arising there from must be concluded on or before October 7 as earlier published in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 general elections.

“The last day for submission of lists of sponsored candidates (Form CFOO2) and personal particulars (Form CF001) remains October 18 for Presidential and National Assembly and November 2 for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly,” he said.

He maintained that INEC would only receive list of candidates submitted by the national chairmen and national secretaries of the parties.
