Court refuses FG’s plea for arrest of Ekweremadu

Deputy president of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremmadu, on Wednesday blamed the insecurity situation in Nigeria on structure and not lack of funding.

He argued that with the current structure, spending all the money in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to equip the police, army and other security agencies will not address the issue of insecurity currently facing the country.

Also noting that the Federal Government has been applying the wrong solution to security issues in Nigeria, the Senate deputy president said that to address the problems, government has to tackle insecurity in the country with the appropriate measures.

He stated this when he appeared on a monitored breakfast programme on Channels Television, Sunrise Daily on Wednesday in Abuja.

“We are applying the wrong solution to problems that are clearly within our reach to resolve; the issue is not funding.

“If you bring the whole money in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and give to the police, nothing will change; if you do that also with the Army, nothing will change; the problem is structure, not the funding,” he said.

According to the senator, it was sequel upon this that the National Assembly wants to amend the constitution in order to give room for the creation of state and community police.

The Senate had at its plenary on Tuesday, following a motion sponsored by Senator Jonah Jang, former Plateau State governor, directed its constitutional review committee to initiate the process towards amending the constitution for the creation of community and state police.
