KENYA: 15 people missing, many displaced after heavy downpour

Rescue operatives in Kenya have declared no fewer that 15 people missing in the Kipchumwa and Kaben areas of Elgeiyo Marakwet following heavy downpour which sparked flash floods late on Saturday.

Search and rescue efforts are under way in western Kenya where heavy rain has caused mudslides and flooding with local reports stating that a police post, several schools and a market in West Pokot County have been submerged and a number of households left marooned.

Kenya Red Cross says approximately 15 people are missing in the neighbouring county of Elgeyo-Marakwet as the floodwaters left the area inaccessible, hampering struggle to reach those affected.

A national radio station had tweeted footage from Elgeyo-Marakwet showing raging waters while ocal officials have urged the government to provide helicopters to help the rescue mission.
