Mass sack looms in FG Commission

Head of Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Deaconess Joan Ayo, has disclosed that the on-going staff audit has shown some irregular and unauthorised appointments.
According to her, such appointments have been declared null and void as they were not backed by any vacancy of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF).
The spokesman of FCSC, Dr Joel Oruche, quoted Ayo as stating that the staff audit was aimed at fishing out the irregular and unauthorised appointees and delisting them from the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
“This action is necessary because the appointments are not backed by any vacancy from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and as such, were not budgeted for. Besides they are in gross violation of the Federal Character principle,” Ayo said.
She stated that vacancies from the HCSF would soon be advertised, promising that all Nigerians who are qualified would be given the opportunity to compete for the available jobs while selection would be strictly based on merit within the context of principle of federal character.
Ayo assured that the FCSC would continue to ensure that promotion is strictly based on merit, adding that the guidelines for appointment, promotion and discipline is being reviewed to meet the increasing demand of present reality.
It would be recalled that different civil society groups, including popular activists, Aisha Yesufu, Chido Onumah and members of Citizens of Impact, Enough is Enough, Youthup Africa had recently protested alleged illegal recruitment and nepotism in some government agencies, questioning the anti-corruption effort of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Daniel Olatunde, convener of Citizens of Impact, in his speech during the protest in Abuja alleged that Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), embarked on illegal recruitment exercises and that some of the recruits paid huge amounts to get the jobs.
He noted that one of the 909 persons recruited by the CBN “through backdoor” was a nephew of Mr. Buhari.
He added “FIRS Chairman, Babatunde Fowler, lied barefaced and was deceiving Nigerians. He said the body was going to recruit 1,250 people during a session with the Senate Finance Committee, at a time he had already concluded the recruitment of children of his cronies including that of John Enoh, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance,” Olatunde said.
Earlier, the House of Representatives had mandated its committees on Federal Character and Banking and Currency to investigate the alleged secret recruitment 909 staff by Central Bank of Nigeria into various cadre of the bank without the required authority.
