Court halts APC's plan to hold indirect primary in Kogi

Ahead of the February 16 presidential and National Assembly elections and the March 2 governorship and state House of Assembly polls,National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise APC candidates in Zamfara State.

Oshiomhole made the plea in a letter dated February 13, 2019 and addressed to INEC chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmood, praying him to respect a position said to have been taken by the Court of Appeal on a case involving the party in Zamfara State.

In the letter, reference number APC/NIDQ/INEC/19/019/08 and entitled ‘submission of candidates in Zamafara State’, Oshiomhole said, “I refer to our previous correspondence to you dated 25th January, 2019 in respect of our party’s candidates for governorship, deputy governorship. Senate, House of Representatives and state House of Assembly in respect of the 2019 General Elections for Zamfara State.

“We wish to inform you that the Court of Appeal, Sokoto Division on the 13th February, 2019 dismissed the Appeal of the Appellants challenging the judgment of the Trial Court delivered on 25th January, 2019.

“We therefore urge the Commission to give effect to the said judgment of the High Court of Justice, Zamfara State delivered on the 25th of January, 2019.

“We look forward to you treating the matter with the urgency it requires.

“Please find attached a Certified True Copy of the Enrolled Orders/Rulings of the Court of Appeal delivered on 13h February, 2019.”

INEC had after the APC supposedly failed to hold primaries in Zamfara said that it was not going to accept candidates of the party for any elective position in the state in the coming elections.

There have been different court rulings on the matter both in favour and against the party, since the state APC dragged the matter to court.

However an Appeal Court in Sokoto is said to have on Wednesday dismissed the appeal of the appellants challenging the judgment of Zamfara High Court which mandated INEC to recognise the APC candidates from the state.
