We did not endorse Fayose for president –CAN

Published

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dissociated itself from a letter purportedly endorsing Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose’s 2019 presidential ambition.

A letter by CAN general secretary, Musa Asake, dated October 16, 2017 and addressed to Fayose, had acknowledged the leadership qualities of the governor and pledged support for the audacious ambition of the Ekiti number one citizen.

The letter had been interpreted and reported in the media as CAN’s endorsement of Fayose’s ambition to contest for the office of the president of Nigeria in 2019.

But responding, CAN in a statement by lAdebayo Oladeji, spokesperson to its President, Samson Ayokunle freed itself from the letter and said that Asake wrote the letter on his personal capacity and not on CAN’s behalf.

The Christian body said that it became necessary to put the record straight because, since the leakage of the letter, “Christian stakeholders have been making calls to CAN President asking for clarifications since there was never a time the matter was discussed by the leadership of the Association.”

He said, “In the letter. Dr Asake stated it there clearly that it was his personal letter. This contradicts the impression being given by the media that CAN had endorsed the governor. There was no time CAN or the President of CAN authorized such a letter. It was the personal opinion of the general secretary.

“However, anyone who wants to run for any political office in Nigeria has our goodwill in CAN and we would be praying for them if he or she is well qualified to contest, including the respectable Governor Fayose.

“Our prayer to God is to always get a godly, a detribalized and peace loving leader presiding over the affairs of the country”, the CAN statement read.

CAN has been contributing too much to Nigeria’s politics lately, the religious body needs to be quiet about politics. It is not healthy for it’s personaly

Endorsing Fayose is automatically a failed mission, I’m sure CAN will never want to risk its image for someone who’s just having fun in politics – Fayose

What you mean someone who’s just having fun in politics? You think Fayose is in politics to play? If he was in politics to play, he won’t be a governor and still be aspiring to be a president. Like play like joke, that’s how he’ll emery the president and everyone will be shocked.
