Osinbajo In Kogi as floods claim 108 lives, displace 141,369 others

A total of 108 lives have been lost and another 192 people sustained injuries as a result of the disaster caused by flood in Kogi State, so said National Emergency Management Agency NEMA on Monday.

NEMA also revealed through its spokesman Sanni Datti, that about 13,031 houses have been destroyed as a result of the flood while 122,653 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged in the state.

The agency’s situation report on the flooding also revealed that the disaster had left 141,369 people internally displaced.

NEMA also stated that about 441,251 people had been affected by flood in about 50 local government areas in the country with a total breakdown of 441,251 people affected by the flood nationwide showing that Kogi State suffered the highest, with 118,199 people affected.

Other states in the ranking of affected areas include; Kebbi, Anambra, Niger with 94,991, 64,331 and 51,719 affected people respectively.

Other affected states are Delta with 37,017 people; Edo, 31,113 people; Kwara, 41,680; and Benue, 2,201

Meanwhile, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has pledged the Federal Government’s support and assistance to persons displaced by floods in Kogi State.

The VP made the pledge by the Federal Government on Monday while on a visit to the St.Luke’s Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp in Koton-Karfe.

He said, “I have already done some preliminary assessment; some relief materials have been sent and there is a need for more and we will ensure that more relief materials are sent.”

The VP who was in company of the Kogi State governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, also pleaded with people try to accommodate one another, “especially in this trying period”.

“We should be able to accommodate our people, to be as comfortable as possible, despite the terrible circumstances of this flooding,” he said.
