PDP loses out finally as Supreme Court affirms Obaseki as Edo governor

Nigeria’s apex Court has dismissed the appeal filed by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Pastor Ize-Iyamu challenging the election of incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki. It, however,  stated that it would give details of its reasons for the judgment on July 24, 2017.

The seven-man panel of the court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onneghen which unanimously dismissed the appeal, stated that it was able to arrive at the judgement more quickly having gone through the brief earlier.

The panel held that both interlocutory and main Appeal Ize-Iyamu lodged before it lacked merit.

Mr Ize-Iyamu and his party in the September 28 2016 governorship election had approached the apex court having also lost out at the Appeal Court.

They had filed 21 grounds upon which they demanded, that Ize-Iyamu be declared winner of the election.

In his reaction to the judgement, Ize-Iyamu acknowledged, that the Supreme Court has by its judgment brought to an end his “struggle for the office of the governor of Edo State which began on 28 September, 2016”.

He congratulated Mr Obaseki for the victory, and called on the people of the state to “keep the fire burning in the quest for an Edo State of our dreams”.

I feel PDP has won the case, you won’t say this nonsense from your mouth. APC won that case illegally!

It is actually very silly to think Obeseki will lose the case by any means. This is Nigeria, once INEC declares a candidate winner, the other candidates who lost should not bother to waste money in court because they will not win

Now that the court of law has cleared PDP’s doubts, they can go and rest. After all, they just won in Osun state, they should keep celebrating that and accept defeat peacefully like Jonathan did in 2015
