TCN sees DISCOs as cause of power challenge in Nigeria

Gas supply to generating stations has increased after the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) restored a ruptured pipeline, making power generation into national grid to rise by 1304.3 Mega Watts.

The gas pipeline belonging to Nigeria Gas Company (NGC), which supplies gas to most thermal electricity generating plants in the country, was ruptured on Friday, leading to the shut down of six power plants.

The rupture of the gas pipeline and technical issues at the Shell gas wells on Saturday had caused the gas supply to drop significantly.

Data obtained from TCN on Tuesday revealed that the country’s power generation increased by 1,304.3MW, as it surged from the 2,572.6MW recorded on Sunday to 3,876.9MW on Monday.

Speaking in Lagos on Tuesday, the General Manager, Public Affairs of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Mrs Ndidi Mbah, assured that power supply would be restored to normal within a day or two.

Mbah said the increase in power generation into the National Grid was an indication that gas supply had improved.

According to the General Manager, as soon as the gas build up is completed, the affected generating stations would resume normal generation into the national grid.

The TCN commended the NNPC and the NGC for the quick intervention and also appreciated the Ministry of Power, Generation Companies (GENCOs), Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and electricity customers for their cooperation during the crises period.

Mbah said through the implementation of Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme, TCN was building new substations as well as upgrading existing ones and transmission lines all over the country.

“This is expected to further stabilise the Grid and also put necessary flexibility and redundancy in line with N-1 capacity,” she said.
