Ripples Nigeria gets commendation at Wole Soyinka Awards

Ripples Nigeria, a frontline multimedia online news platform has once again added to its array of accomplishments in investigative journalism.

Its reporter, Ebere Ndukwu was awarded a certificate of commendation at the 12th Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting (WSAIJ), which held in Ikeja, Saturday night.

The commendation followed an investigative report titled “Investigation… Aregbesola and the scam called Opon-Imo,” published by Ripples Nigeria in October 2016.

Ripples Nigeria had about three months ago, also received outstanding recognition at the Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) Media Excellence Award 2017 held in Lagos, for its important contribution to enterprise and the economy through excellent, relevant and impactful reporting.

At that event, Ripples Nigeria had emerged first runner-up in the most-entered-for and tightly-contested category in 2017, ‘Business and Economy’.

At the WSAIJ event, Fisayo Soyombo, former editor of TheCable, emerged as winner in the online category with his story, “Undercover: In Borno,children are dying at IDP camps, foodstuffs are ‘disappearing’ at SEMA.”

Ayodele Ojo of the Sun newspaper emerged winner of the photo category of the 2017 WSAIJ while Adekunle Yusuf from The Nation Newspaper, emerged winner for the print category and equally clinched the grand prize for this year’s award with his report, “Exposed: How corruption, favouritism thrive in Unilorin, published in March.

No winner emerged in the Radio, TV and Editorial cartoon categories of the WSAIJ 2017 award.

A former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, and the Executive Director of the Media Rights Agenda, Edetaen Ojo, received honorary award at the event.

Ezekwesili received the Anti-Corruption Defender award, for her untiring efforts to promote transparency and accountability as well as her commitment to the values of justice within and outside Nigeria.

“Ojo on the other hand received the Lifetime Award for Journalistic Excellence for his leadership role in issues that enshrine freedom of expression, including his dogged trailblazing effort at ensuring the passage and implementation of the Freedom of Information Act (FoI) in Nigeria.
