The PDP Must Reform To Provide A Viable Opposition And Democratic Alternative

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to without delay, declare all collated results of the state’s National and state assemblies rerun elections.

The PDP argued that the Electoral Law does not support the suspension of the declaration of results after collation has been completed. ‎

The party stated this in Abuja on Tuesday, at a press conference addressed by its National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

The PDP also advocated for the immediate constitution of a panel to investigate the circumstances that led to the violence experienced during the rerun with a view to unravelling the truth and bringing the culprits to book.

Sheriff said: “Whilst we join well-meaning Nigerians to condemn the cases of violence which reportedly characterized the process in some areas, we enjoin the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to immediately constitute a panel to carry out a dispassionate investigation of the circumstances with a view to unravelling the truth and bringing the culprits to book.”

Governor Wike on his part, said it was shocking that the electoral body was still holding back several results already collated and announced at the various collation centres, adding that commission lacked powers to cancel results that have been announced at the various local government collation centres,

Wike, who stated this when the Rivers State Correspondent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists paid him a visit on Tuesday, said further: “Tell INEC to release results declared. You have announced that PDP won. What are you doing with them? Nigeria of today is not Nigeria of yesterday. People have become more aware”, he said.

The governor also alleged that it was the plan of his adversaries to use the state House of Assembly to impeach him. He however said they have failed, as his party, the PDP is solidly on ground.
