Residents of 4th Avenue in Festac Town, Lagos were thrown into fear and disarray when a gang of robbers numbering up to 40 raided two new generation banks earlier today.

The robbers who reportedly gained access to the area through the canal on 4th Avenue overwhelmed security personnel on duty at both banks shooting sporadically in the air as they held their captives hostage while the operation lasted.

Hours after looting both banks, the robbers decided to escape the scene of the crime but they were met with battle ready men of the police force who fired shots at them.

According to Area E Commander, ACP Frank Mba, the police tried their best despite being disadvantaged numerically.

“We recovered about 27million from the robbers, who were forced to drop the stolen money before they fled. About 240 rounds of AK47 live ammunition were also retrieved from the robbers. While the money they were about to escape with was also recovered and has been deposited at another branch of Diamond Bank, still in FESTAC Town.” He added.

Meanwhile, a resident of an adjourning apartment close to the bank, Jane Ndirika, and her two-year-old daughter, Mmesoma, were reportedly hit inside their apartment by stray bullets from the bandits who were shooting sporadically in all directions.

Reports said both mother and child later died as a result of injuries they sustained from the bullet. A commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider) who was also hit by stray bullets reportedly also died later in an undisclosed private hospital.
