Rooney’s record-breaking goal earns United a point at Stoke City

English striker Wayne Rooney became Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer after netting in a stoppage-time free-kick to help United draw 1-1 against Stoke City on Saturday.

Rooney, who was a substitute in the Matchday 22 Premier League fixture, curled in from the left-hand corner of the penalty box for his 250th United goal, one more than Sir Bobby Charlton who had had the record until now.

Stoke took the lead in the 19th minute when Juan Mata poked Erik Pieters’ cross into his own net.

The Jose Mourinho’s men wasted a lot of chances, as Stoke City looked set for their third Premier League win in a row. But Rooney’s effort in the 94th minute preserved the Red Devils’ 17-game unbeaten run even though there is a drop in points.

United are now three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal and 11 off leaders Chelsea, who both play on Sunday against Burnley FC and Hull City respectively.

Wayne, reacting to his all-time goalscoring record, the legend told reporters that the honour meant a lot to him.

“It means a hell of a lot. It is a great honour and I am very proud. It is difficult at the minute to be over-pleased because of the result but in the grand scheme it is huge honour. It is not something I expected when I joined. As I said before, I am proud and I hope there is more to come.

“The players who have played for this club have been world class. I am proud to play for this club. To be all-time goalscorer is a huge honour,” the 31-year old said.

United will travel to Hull City for the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Thursday, holding a 2-0 lead already; and will play Wigan in the FA Cup on 29 January. While Stoke City will get to play again on 1st February, when they host Everton in the Premier League.
