Saraki: Reps mandate Dogara to meet Buhari

Reps optimistic 2016 budget will be passed Thursday

Apparently seeking a soft landing for the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, who is facing a 13-count charge for corruption and alleged false declaration of asset, the House of Representatives on Wednesday asked the speaker, Yakubu Dogara, to meet President Muhammadu Buhari for “urgent political solutions”.

The House maintained that it foresaw possible dangers to democracy in the development and therefore called for political solutions.

The resolution to meet the president was passed following a proposal by House Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor.

The proposal specifically called on the “leadership of the House” to intervene in the issue by seeking audience with President Muhammadu Buhari to find a way out of Bukola’s travails in the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

“The House mandates the leadership of the House to meet with the President with a view to politically resolving all outstanding issues relating to National Assembly in the interest of Nigerians.

“It Mandates the Speaker to intervene in the present issues and challenges being faced by the Chairman of the National Assembly (Saraki) with a view to finding a political solution and protecting the institution of the National Assembly as a whole for the interest of our democracy,” the resolution read.

The session, where the resolution was reached, was presided over by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

It will be recalled that the House called for ‘circumspection’ in the case even as it said it was fully in support of the ongoing anti-corruption war being waged by the Federal Government.
