Burdened by the deplorable and embarrassing state of federal roads in the South-East, governors and other leaders of the zone on Sunday pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently take action to fix the roads.

The leaders expressed sadness over the advanced deterioration of federal roads in the zone and said it was necessary the Federal Government did something about them, especially during this dry season.

The leaders at the meeting discussed the regional economic summit with support from the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) slated to take place between November 11 and 13, 2017.

They also discussed and accepted the visit of Brenthurst Foundation of South Africa to the South East for an economic mission which will take place between November 6-11

The South-East leaders equally expressed sadness over the awful state of Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
The communiqué issued at the close of the meeting and read by Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi read, “Further to our meeting with Mr. President earlier in the month on the deplorable state of infrastructure in the South East, especially federal roads such as Enugu-9th Mile- Onitsha Road; Enugu- Port Harcourt Road; Aba-Ikot Ekpene Road; Okigwe-Owerri Road and 9th Mile-Makurdi Express Road.

“The meeting called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps in repairing the roads especially in this dry season. Equally of importance is the deplorable state of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, especially the runway, terminal buildings and cargo shelter. We request that urgent steps be taken to address the problems at the airport.”

On the forthcoming Anambra State November 18 governorship election, the leaders said they are happy at the willingness of the people of the state to participate in the election. They called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make sure the election holds as has been stated.
