Amos Yohanna has been sworn in as the new senator representing the Adamawa North Senatorial District by the Senate’s deputy president, Jibrin Barau.

Yohanna (PDP, Adamawa), who was sworn in on Wednesday, during plenary. replaces Senator Elisha Abbo (APC) who was sacked by the Court of Appeal Court on Monday last week.

A three-member panel presided over by Justice C. E. Nwosu-Iheme, last week, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a Certificate of Return to Amos Yohanna as the duly elected Senator after it upturned Abbo’s victory at the tribunal level.

The appellate court vacated the tribunal judgment which had earlier affirmed Abbo of the APC as the winner of the senatorial election.

INEC had declared Abbo the winner of the February 25 parliamentary election.

Yohanna had gone to the tribunal to contest the declaration but his case was thrown out.

Unfazed, the PDP candidate sought the appellate court to present his case anyway. His attorney, Johnson Usman (SAN), was successful in persuading the court that his client’s cause merited their consideration.

Following the parties’ arguments, the Appeal Court agreed with Usman that the results submitted unequivocally demonstrated that the Electoral Act was not being followed, in accordance with Section 137 of the Act.

The court, thereafter, deducted the invalid votes from both parties and found that Yohanna and the PDP won the election by a majority of lawful votes.
