SENEGAL: Court slams opposition leader with 5-yr jail term

Senegalese opposition leader Khalifa Sall will spend the next five years behind bars after he was convicted of embezzlement and falsifying documents.

The embattled leader who is accused of embezzling 1.8 billion CFA francs ($3.40 million) was arrested last year after his crime became public knowledge.

Before his arrest and prosecution by the High Court in Dakar, Sall was seen as a potential rival to President Macky Sall in elections expected next year.

The 62-year-old who is mayor of Dakar, had denied the charges against him as politically motivated.
Sall represents a growing challenge to incumbent President Macky Sall, who shares the same name but is not a relation.
