A suspected militant blew himself up killing four people and wounding six others during a Lebanese military operation in Beirut on Saturday.

The home of a suspect was stormed at dawn in the town of Dar Amar before he detonated his explosive, killing himself, his mother, sister and niece while wounding four other soldiers sources say.

The suspect had been wanted by authorities for more than a year for taking part in clashes in the city of Beirut.

Fighting from the nearly five-year civil war in neighbouring Syria has spilled across Lebanon’s borders with armed groups such as al-Nusra Front and other Sunni organisations squaring off against Lebanese security forces and Hezbollah.

In a deal brokered by Qatar on Tuesday, al-Nusra Front released 16 Lebanese security officers – soldiers and policemen – in exchange for 13 of its prisoners, including five women, held by the Lebanese government.
