There’s no evidence of plastic rice in Nigeria, says Health Minster

Nigerian Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has debunked the alleged news making round that plastic rice is in circulation in Nigerian markets.

He said preliminary laboratory tests carried out by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) shows that there is known evidence yet to back up the claims.

The Health Minister stated this on his twitter handle @Fmohnigeria. He said, ”I have just been briefed by the DG @nafdacagency on plastic rice reports. Preliminary test results reveal there is no evidence backing claims.”
Recently, Nigerian Customs officials had seized a batch of 102 bags of rice thought to have been “plastic” rice. Samples of the rice were sent out to laboratories for testing.

However, Adewole twitted after meeting with the NAFDAC that the rice tested negative for floating, cooked and smelled normal, had regular off-white colour and that its moisture and pre-ashing tests also indicated normal levels.
While he urged Nigerians not to panic at the moment, he said NAFDAC “will release detailed findings to public as soon as it concludes investigations.”
