Top aides of South Korean President resign over calls for her removal

In the wake of protests for the removal of President Park Geun-hye, over ties to her controversial friend, four top aides of the president and her Chief of Staff have all thrown in the towel.

Their resignations have however been accepted by Park who has been in the eye of the storm amid political crisis involving an old friend, Choi Soon-sil, the 60-year-old daughter of a South Korean religious leader and one-time mentor of Park.

Meanwhile, Choi who has been accused of abusing her personal connections with the president to influence and interfere in state affairs, arrived South Korea to face prosecutors investigating allegations she used her friendship with Park for personal gains.

“I committed a crime I deserve to die for,” said Choi, according to pool reporters who followed her into the building, using a Korean expression to convey deep remorse.

“Please forgive me.”

Choi returned to South Korea early on Sunday from Germany, where she had been staying, and was ready to answer prosecutors’ questions, her lawyer said earlier.
