Tragedy as 17 perish as 18-seater bus plunges into river

A catastrophic scene played out on the Kaduna-Abuja Road when an 18-seater bus plunged into River Rijana with all but one of the passengers in the vehicle surviving the incident.

According to reports, the passengers in the bus were relatives who were returning to Kogi State after they had gone to celebrate the Eid el-Kabir in Kano State when the bus unfortunately plunged into the river.

Only three bodies had been recovered from the river and only one of the passengers survived the unfortunate incident as at the time of filing in this report.

While confirming the incident, Mr. Salisus Galadunci, the Kaduna Sector’s Head of Operations of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, said the accident was caused by over speeding and fatigue.

“Rescuers from FRSC Doka, Katari and Kakau were immediately dispatched with ambulances. They were supported by local divers to search for survivors. The incident was caused by fatigue and over speeding.

“Eventually, only three bodies were recovered, while the remaining persons could not be found, including the survivor’s daughter.

“Among the FRSC rescue team were the Zone 1 Commander, Bulus Darwang; Kaduan State Sector Commander, Francis Udoma, and Zone 1 Head of Operations, Yomi Asaniyan,” adding that efforts were still on to recover bodies of the missing passengers.
