Two die as violence breaks out during APC councilorship election primary in Lagos

Following a fresh outbreak of violence during the ward primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State on Monday, at least two party members in the in Shogunle area.

The primary election was to elect who will be the councillorship candidate of the ruling APC for the area in the coming July 22 local council poll in Lagos State.

One of the persons killed was simply identified as ‘Hamburger’, a notable transporter in the area.

His death angered his supporters who went berserk ready to lynch anyone in sight, a situation that led to traders, commuters and residents in the affected area scuttling for safety.

The identity of the other victim was not known as at the time of this report, but the situation had been brought under calm following the intervention of security operatives.

Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident, but would not give details of what happened.

Earlier on Saturday, the local government primary election of the APC at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, was marred by violence.

Following myriad of issues, the party had postponed the exercise meant for last Saturday and had on Sunday announced that the councillorship primary in the 377 wards of its 57 local government areas would hold on Monday.

But while the rescheduled poll went smoothly in many of the areas affected, delegates had to endure long hours of waiting before the arrival of electoral officers.
